Through her he learns how to reconcile himself to the speed and chaos of modern life and the modern metropolis and take control of his own future. His transformation is symbolised by a sub-plot in which Jonny, an African-American jazz musician steals a valuable violin from the pompous and self-regarding virtuoso Daniello, a symbolic transfer of cultural energy from the Old World to the New. The opera ends with Max deciding to journey to America and Jonny’s jazz music ‘striking up’ in exuberant celebration.
